Should it be legal?
Prostitution
Should it be legal or is it right to illegal? I'm voting with illegal, it's very dangerous for a woman to do that.

Re: Prostitution
Like with abortion, this is an attempt for legislation to mend a social problem.
So don't waste your time hoping. People have no problem breaking laws to survive. I'm very much opposed to prostitution, but no law is going to stop it, unfortunately.

Re: Prostitution
Definitely not. It being illegal is the only reason some people don't participate in it. If it was legalized, it'd be more of a problem and would spawn more problems like STD's spreading and more abortions and things like that....

Yes I realize their are people who do it because they are desperate and need the money to survive but it's not SAFE for a woman, their's a high chance of being raped, or beaten and it would make me feel very ashamed if something like that were to pass through and be legalized.

Re: Prostitution
When you look deep into it, it's very worrying. I personally think it should be illegal. As you said there are many risks, and other possibilities.

Re: Prostitution
Well, the idea behind legalization is relative to the idea behind lifting prohibition. Apply that to something that matters like legalizing marijuana. I'm not a pothead, but the amount of revenue generated by legalization is too substantial to ignore. Plus, so many people do it anyway, legalization cuts down costs of enforcement and generally just let's people have the freedoms they crave. People wouldn't break the law if it didn't infringe upon freedom of choice.
Re: Prostitution
But Prostitution is one of the few things that should be illegal, you can't get raped by smoking pot.

Re: Prostitution
Yes, that's what I was getting at. We should be devoting time to legalizing things that can actually be legalized. Prostitution is just dehumanizing.

Re: Prostitution
It should be legal, because it could prevent some of the more violent crimes (take a...stab at a guess)
and surferdude, congratulations the embodiment of the legislative body with that last post. Its not like it'd be forced... its all consensual so if people wanna take that risk why stop them?

Re: Prostitution
Because these people would be taking risks with implications and consequences too large for them to properly handle. In dire need, people think in extremities. I imagine that prostitutes believe that it is the only way to make a living for themselves and to keep themselves alive. From the outside, this is obviously illogical, there are opportunities that exist that probably go unconsidered by prostitutes due to their mindset in society. As much as I believe this to be true, I belive the purpose of legislation is to attempt to protect citizens from harm. Being raped or beaten is not likely a risk that a prostitute would calculate into their plans. Regardless of whether or not the law would necessarily be followed is unimportant at the point in time that it is what is best for society.
Fuzzy, I do not feel that you can justify legalization by saying that it will prevent more violent crimes- like what, exactly? Prostitution is the gateway for increasingly violent crimes.

Re: Prostitution
If you could turn it into a legal business then the "call girls" would be guaranteed clean before being hired. When you pick up sluts on the street they're more than likely to be ridden with diseases, but a legal business would screen each applicant before they started working. Pimps would be driven out of business, and the call girls would be in a safer environment. Prostitution is ALWAYS going to happen, might as well legalize it and make it safer.

Re: Prostitution
Legalize it, it's money to help our crashing economy. (Legal Business = Paying Taxes)
Also (like Violet stated), it wouldn't be in the dark. Prostitution would be more of a business instead of one of those little, creepy vendors you find in the dark alleys. It'd be more organized and more controllable.

Re: Prostitution
For some people, its the only surefire way that they know to get a steady income. Its pretty sad and while I think prostitution should still be illegal, the state should enroll these people in some career decision helping class and get them a job somewhere else.
Then again, I don't know if they do this already but thats what I think they should do.

It's empirically been proven that whether it's legal or not, it will happen.

WTH? Some ppl, me included, don't need more taxes to pay thanks to you know who. So still it should be illegal plus it's a violation on morals and even on the Christianity-based country that it used to be.

Re: Prostitution
This country shouldn't revolve around those pure, pristine, immaculate christian morals of yours either
And you wouldn't be paying taxes for this, the businesses would be. It'd generate more revenue for the state.

Re: Prostitution
I just don't like the idea of selling sex.
Sure, it'll still happen.
But we have to ask ourselves "why?" and examine the problems. Jacque Fresco of The Venus Project has an interesting philosophy in which he states that laws are basically just the government's attempt to deal with a problem. He said what we SHOULD be doing is getting social engineers on it to see how the problem can be stopped.
So instead of arguing legal/illegal and simply saying "Ya can't do that!" maybe we should investigate to see what sparked the problem, and reverse it. Reverse it early, and most importantly, educate the public. No, don't make citizens sit in front of the news to let them form prefabricated propaganda views, but invite them to open lectures and presentations by professors and overall geniuses on the topic, not news reporters who are trying to increase their program's views. And when people see the thorough and complete thoughts that manifested in the minds of genuine intellectuals, intellectuals who donate their time and resources into helping our world, they may change their own views and morals.
It's just too bad you can't teach an "open mind."
And it seems that's what members our world need most.

Re: Prostitution
How is prostitution immoral? It is consensual.
Strip clubs are basically the same thing.
There are plenty of things people do to themselves that would be considered immoral but I think you can still live a happy life regardless. With legalising prostitution at least it'll generate some revenue and it'll be a cleaner service.
